Here are some truths I have learned through my personal experience of living with scoliosis. I think we can make this list longer! What would you add?
Scoliosis affects our entire personhood, not just our spines.
You didn’t cause your scoliosis.
Your scoliosis pain is real.
Pain can be an invisible experience that is felt not just physically, but emotionally, and socially.
People’s thoughts and feelings are affected by scoliosis.
While seeking physical treatment is important, it is equally important to focus on our emotional health.
Scoliosis isn’t a competition. People with large curves can have minimal pain and people with small curves can be in tremendous pain and vice versa.
The potential negative emotional effects of scoliosis don't always match the severity of the scoliosis curvature.
People with scoliosis (and all back conditions) want to be heard and not dismissed by health practitioners.
A diagnosis can evoke some strong emotions. Our sense of self might change.
A diagnosis will mean different things to different people depending on stage of life and other circumstances.
A scoliosis diagnosis can lead to worry about your future prognosis.
People living with scoliosis are experts too.
Accepting our scoliosis and the emotions that come with it, takes time and practice, but it is possible.
